I was taken to task (very nicely & very respectfully) by a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. This woman has been a member for 18 years (major congratulations) and proceeded to tell me that there are portions of my story that are incorrect. Now, we know this is fiction, but when I write about a relevant social issue such as drug abuse, I don't want to steer anyone in the wrong direction that may happen to read this and take it as gospel.
The problem with my story was that members of Narcotics Anonymous are expected to abstain from alcohol as well as drugs in the twelve-step program. When they give you a chip for being clean & sober, they expect you to be both.
Because I thought this was important and not just a readers whim (and mostly because the reader that pointed it out did not really expect me to change the novel), I revised the situations within the manuscript where alcohol was an issue with Taylor's character.
I appreciate my new friend's concern and the manner in which she pointed it out to me.
Thanks to all...
